Fake Wen vs Real Wen
Now for the one thing that everyone is really looking forward to - the showdown between the fake Wen and the real Wen. I did a comparison between the two today and wanted to show what I found out.
But first let's have a background check between the two:
Opponent 1:
From chazdean.com
$32.00
16 oz bottle
Opponent 2:
From amazon.com (which later led up to be from wenhaircare.com)
90 day supply pack - $85.80
16 oz bottle

Real Wen and fake Wen |
Now from the
picture, you can actually see that it looks like the fake Wen (right)
and the real Wen (left) look rather different. They both claim to be 16
oz and I don't think they lied. The one main distinctive feature is that
the bottles are different from each other. That means STRIKE 1 for the
fake Wen. Not a good start.

Real Wen and fake Wen (back) |
Here is the back of
both the two Wen conditioners. The labels are different sizes, and the
pumps are different from each other as well. You can't actually see the
differences between the pumps since they are inside the bottle, but they
are different. The ingredients are not the same either. The fake
seems to use a cheaper type of conditioner or a whole different
formula. (STRIKE 2 )

Real Wen conditioner (left) and fake Wen conditioner (right) |
What surprised me
the most between the two was that they smelled almost exactly the same.
The only difference was that the real Wen conditioner had a lighter mint
scent and was easy to rub into my hair. Not to mention that the real
Wen conditioner had a somewhat lighter colour than the fake. (STRIKE 3)

Real Wen conditioner (left) and fake Wen conditioner (right) smudged together. |
The fake Wen
conditioner takes a while to rub in together and is "heavy" while the
real Wen conditioner is easy to rub against your hands.

Real Wen Shower Comb (top) Fake Wen Shower Comb (bottom) |
Isn't odd how the
logo on both of the shower combs are not the same size or colour? The
real logo is a greyish colour and smaller while the fake logo is much
bigger and a gold colour. The fake Wen shower comb is also much bigger in
size compared to the real shower comb.

The teeth of the real Wen shower comb. |
Look how the bottom
of the comb's teeth are round. This makes the shower comb more gentle
to your scalp and hair along with a better experience when combining
with the Wen cleansing conditioners. (I do admit though I tested this
comb on another hair product and it still worked the same way or even
better)

The teeth of the fake Wen shower comb. |
Notice how the
bottom of the comb's teeth are sharp and edgy. Ouch ouch ouch! This comb
is rough against your scalp and hair and super hard to bend. And I mean
REALLY hard. The real comb is also hard but not as much as this comb
is.
Conclusion
We have come to the end of the showdown. Unfortunately, the fake Wen from wenhaircare.com has lost. Too many strikes along the way that I had lost count! There were way too many differences as well and the quality isn't the best.
I
hope this post has helped anyone doing research on Wen. Feel free to
leave comments and don't forget to check out my other Wen posts. I may
have some more in the future.

After reading your blog about the fake wen, I actually wrote to Chazdean.com asking if wenhaircare.com was a fake or real site or not and why their product has different ingredients. They wrote back the next day with this response, so I thought I'd pass it on to you :)

-Response from chazdean.com...
Thank you for contacting us. The www.wenhaircare.com website is our infomercal site which is run by Guthy Renker, they do carry a slightly different version of WEN than our website www.chazdean.com or QVC. They are both WEN products and are both created by Chaz Dean. Because of regulations on products sold internationally, the ingredient's through Guthy Renker have had to be changed slightly. Chaz worked very hard to make sure that the quality and philosophy behind WEN is still upheld, and that product performance would be identical.
As far as Knock off WEN products out there, unfortunately that does occur. The only way to ensure that you receive official WEN products is to only purchase
them through our website www.chazdean.com, the Guthy Renker website www.wenhaircare.com, selective Sephora stores or www.sephora.com or through QVC or www.qvc.com.
I hope this information has helped you out! If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us again!
Sincerely,
Jillian

ReplyDeleteThey really need to label it, man. I had used it religiously for years before no longer being able to afford it. Recently I began to use it again and am astonished at this newfound 'modified-version' that's been talked about in Google search results. Thankfully the kit I ordered from the s***ty wenhaircare site had been backordered for a week, so I called today, cancelled, and ordered a better one on sale from QVC. Looking forward to using the real thing! Oh, and you described that crappy, squared-off comb perfectly. What a s***t comb. I couldn't believe that the company would send such a hard comb designed like that, but now come to find it was the knock off. heh, thanks! :D
ReplyDeleteThey say both products, the one sold directly from chazdean and the other distributed from Guthy Renker are basically the same. They are not. The Guthy version has cetyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol listed in the beginning of the ingredients indicating it is a main ingredient. As you all know alcohol dries the hair out. If a small amount is used that's fine because in small amounts it enhances the moisturizing properties. But used as the primary emoillent is counter productive because it dries the hair. It's pretty simple, alcohol dries the hair. So I would say don't buy the Guthy version if you're looking for the best product for your hair.
